PLANNING GUIDE

Flexible Molding Determination

Identify the application, document the curve, and collect the measurements needed to select the correct flexible molding.

Plan Before Ordering

Flexible molding is produced for a specific profile and application. Before ordering, confirm the rigid molding profile to be matched, the total length required, the orientation of the curve, and the tightest radius in the installation.

Measure at the exact surface where the molding will sit. Do not assume that the wall, ceiling, opening, or template is perfectly symmetrical. Record each curved section separately and identify where flexible molding will transition to rigid molding.

Information to Record

  • Molding profile or product number
  • Inside, outside, or arch application
  • Exact curved length required
  • Radius, span, rise, or full-size template
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Quantity and preferred piece lengths
  • Locations of transitions and joints

Important: Do not force a profile around a curve tighter than its approved minimum radius. Confirm the application and measurements before ordering or cutting flexible material.

Identify the Type of Curve

The direction of the bend determines how the flexible profile must be produced and installed.

Inside Radius

An inside or concave radius follows the inside face of a curved wall, ceiling, alcove, or circular detail. Measure the radius at the molding’s installed surface and record the full curved length.

Outside Radius

An outside or convex radius wraps around the exterior face of a curved wall, column, island, or projection. Measure at the outer installed face rather than using an inside dimension.

Arch Radius

An arch bends the molding within the plane of a door, window, niche, or opening. Record the clear span, the rise from the spring line to the top, and the curved length.

Measure the Curve

  1. Mark the exact beginning and end of the flexible section.
  2. Measure the curved run with a flexible tape held along the molding path.
  3. For a true circular radius, measure from the center point to the installed face of the molding.
  4. For an arch, record the opening width or span and the rise from the spring line to the highest point.
  5. For irregular or compound curves, make a rigid full-size template from cardboard, hardboard, or another stable sheet material.
  6. Measure each location independently and recheck dimensions at the jobsite before ordering.

Record the span and rise for arches and curved openings.

Measure the radius at the molding’s installed surface.

Final Determination Checklist

  • The flexible profile matches the adjoining rigid molding.
  • The curve type and bending direction are clearly identified.
  • The tightest radius has been measured and confirmed.
  • The curved length includes appropriate allowance for trimming and joints.
  • Transitions to rigid molding are located and accessible.
  • All dimensions have been checked at the jobsite.
